The Humana Foundation, the philanthropic arm of health insurer Humana, announced $15.2 million in grants Wednesday to support its health equity mission, CBS 19 reports.

According to a release, these grants are going to provide support to seniors and school-age children in living connected and healthy lives.

One $2.5 million grant will go to Older Adult Technology Services, which will use the money to develop an in-person and online experience to help people learn about the difficulties seniors and their caregivers face in addressing social isolation and loneliness.

"Social isolation is a hidden crisis for older adults, and technology can help older adults and caregivers recognize the signs and find solutions to overcome loneliness," the executive director of OATS from AARP says.

Another $2.5 million will go to seven universities, including the University of Virginia, which will use the money to assess a comprehensive food pharmacy program for rural seniors with cardiovascular conditions.

Researchers at Tulane University, the University of South Florida, the University of Kentucky, Indiana University Bloomington, Indiana University Indianapolis, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill are also getting funding.

Three of the research teams will be investigating the effectiveness of interventions in shaping a healthier approach to nutrition, while the other three will be looking at the emotional health of seniors and school-aged children.
