When Crystal Leshchyshyn first heard about the Moosomin Family Resource Center's $30,000 grant from Saskatchewan's Community Initiatives Fund, she thought it was a "great idea" and "a wonderful thing to do," she tells the CBC.

But when the center found out it wouldn't be getting the money for the rest of the year, she was "flabbergasted."

The director of the center, which offers a wide range of programs for kids and their parents in the area of nutrition and play, tells the Saskatoon StarPhoenix the grant won't keep the center's doors open because it won't be able to run as many activities as it used to.

It also won't cover the cost of supplies and wages for staff.

"We're very fortunate, which we're very grateful for," Leshchyshyn says.

"Their support allows us to basically keep our doors open and to offer a variety of programming."

Among the programs the center will receive: a play-based learning program for kids ages 2 to 5, an early childhood nutrition initiative, and a craft and cooking program for kids in pre-school and elementary schools.

The center is one of 150 organizations to receive a total of $2.5 million
